Stretch Marks & Cellulite
Stretch marks appear as silvery white marks and are a form of scarring on the skin caused by tearing of the dermis (middle layer of the skin), often associated with pregnancy and weight gain or rapid stretching of the skin. They can appear anywhere on the body but target places where larger amounts of fat is stored. These include the abdomen, breasts, upper arms, under-arms, thighs (both inner and outer), hips, and buttocks.

Stretch marks are undesirable only cosmetically as they do not pose any health risk and do not compromise the body's ability to function normally and repair itself. Over time stretch marks can diminish but they do not disappear completely.

Cellulite appears as dimpled skin on the lower limbs, abdomen and pelvic region of women after puberty. The causes for cellulite are poorly understood. Rarely seen on men, hormones play a dominant role in the formation of cellulite. Estrogen is the chief culprit which initiates and aggravates cellulite. Other hormones including insulin, the catecholamines adrenaline and noradrenaline, thryoid hormones, and prolactin have all been shown to participate in the development of cellulite.

Cellulite is not only a problem for the well-endowed as even average and underweight people suffer from cellulite as well. However, a diet with excessive amounts of fat, carbohydrates, salt, alcohol or too little fibre can all contribute to an increase of cellulite. Smoking, lack of exercise, stressful lifestyle, tight clothes, high heeled shoes, and sitting or standing in a single position of long periods have also been correlated with an increase in cellulite.
