The lined face can tell the stories of
one's life, one's experience or one's wisdom. But more commonly,
one's age…
While it is normal
to get wrinkles, understanding our skin structure and how
it ages can save us some lines. The skin is made up of three
layers: the epidermis (the visible outermost layer everyone
can see), the dermis or the middle layer and the subcutaneous
or innermost layer. In our youth, wrinkles are absent as the
skin does a great job of stretching and holding in moisture.
Fibres called elastin keep the skin looking and feeling young
while a protein or collagen in the dermis prevents formation
of wrinkles. Over time, the dermis loses both collagen and
elastin, and the skin start to get thinner and lose moisture
easily. The fat in the subcutaneous layer which gives skin
a plump appearance also begins to disappear. Epidermis starts
to sag and wrinkles form.
