My Beauty Mantra I

By all standards, Asian or Worldwide, cultural or social, I think I look mediocre. Some may even say ugly. As I grew older, I began to slowly accept myself in my own skin and love the person inside. For two decades now, I know and accept that I am fearfully and wonderfully made.

Start Small,
Start Somewhere.

I went into the medical aesthetic industry some 28 years ago after a privileged encounter with three ladies individually. Each of them had a story to tell, but all of their stories, at the end of the day, pointed to the fact that an image enhancement can help bring their inner potential into the open and change their perspectives of who they can be. I believe strongly that image enhancement is not just beautifying oneself externally, but most importantly it helps to build up one’s confidence from the inside out. I’ve witnessed these three ladies’ lives changed for the better, empowered from the inside to accomplish things they have never believe they could ever achieve before. These are just a few of the success stories I have encountered. And this is what my calling of being in the medical aesthetic industry is anchored upon till today.

When I started work in the field of medical aesthetics, I invested my time in researching for the best skincare formulations for my patients and myself. In the immense amount of personal research, I came into the realisation that a single formulation can hardly work effectively all the time, even if it is just based on one specific person. The explanation? Our skin undergoes many changes as we mature. Hence, our skincare needs would also inevitably change over time.

Ten years ago, I would swear by a good light moisturizer that does not grease up my skin or cause blocked pores. Now, I cannot do without creams that contain vitamins A, C and E and tretinoin. These vitamins give me the extra glow while they antioxidize my skin, while Tretinoin helps me to look rejuvenated and fresh all the time.

On a daily basis, I apply my creams faithfully, day and night. I customize my own creams, just as how I do for all my patients. These include maintenance creams customized for my face to achieve a smoothening effect on my skin with a perfect glow, nourishing creams for adequate hydration and firming, and preventive creams to keep wrinkles and pigments at bay. And not forgetting the eye creams that I love and find essential to complete the whole skincare routine. Our pair of eyes are the part of the face that communicates most with others, giving non-verbal expressions that can work for us or against us. Taking care of them is thus critical but something that many tend to neglect. Customized eye creams help to lift the area around the eyes and prevent dark circles. They also aid in hydration to prevent wrinkles from appearing at the areas around the eyes.

Just topical skincare alone may not be able to achieve the best results you can get. Regular medical laser treatment sessions need to be integrated into your lifestyle. This is what I personally abide by and has been working for the maintenance of my skin all these years.

Botulin toxin injections and hyaluronic acid fillers have also been included in one of my regular skincare treatments that I will do. Once a year, I will use Botox® to maintain specific areas such as jaws, frown lines, crow feet and pores. My fillers regimen started yearly since I was 33, but now, I only need to top up once in two years.

That’s my beauty journey and mantra. Skincare does not need to be complicated or extensive. Start small, start somewhere.
